The YRs organize this seminar to get to know each other and to improve communication. The YR Forum will be held on two special "forum days" per semester, one in Augsburg and one in Munich. Talks from the YRs provide status reports on the YRs' own work, lab tours and time for discussions stimulate in-depth scientific discussions among YRs of the different projects.
Dates and topics of the upcoming forum will be anounced here.
19. January 2021 - online
You have never heard about DELO? Well, most likely you have one of their products in your wallet! Credit card, health insurance card - their chips are fixed by special glues. And with a high probability, this glue may come from DELO. But there is an abundance of other applications benefitting from DELO's expertise.
Constantin Mons from the DELO Academy warmly welcomed us and shortly introduced DELO. We got to know that DELO developped the strongest glue of the world. Consequently, DELO is listed in the Guinness World Records since 2019!
In a highly interesting presentation, Dr. Sandra Lein gave detailed insights into the fascinating world of adhesives. Automotives, airplanes, smartphones, ski pass - each application requires specially tailored glues and treatments. For these challenging tasks, DELO has several research departments for developping and testing individual solutions. Furthermore, we could host an experiment about the strength of a DELO glue. Curing for 10 seconds by a standardly available UV lamp is sufficient to achieve incredibly strong binding between two plastic plates: 200kg can easily be hold - with a glued area of <1cm².
The last part included an interview with Dr. Ralf Kmeth. He is application engineer and team leader and answered to all questions of the Young Researchers. Before starting at DELO, he studied material science at the University of Augsburg and did his PhD at the Institute of Physics. We got insights into his daily work and which skills from university/ PhD thesis were crucially important for him.
Afterwards, Constantin Mons closed the online session. He hopes that Covid-19 will be under control soon. Then, we can visit DELO "in reality" and repeat the glueing experiments on our own.
We would like to thank all three speakers for the impressive presentation of DELO. The feedback of the Young Researchers was highly positive. Many thanks to Lea Henninger, too, for the perfect organization!
After DELO's presentation, the YR shortly met via Zoom for talking about upcoming events we are already looking forward to:
The new year starts with a company visit! We will get to know DELO - a company located between Landsberg am Lech and beautiful Ammersee. You don't know DELO? Well, that's quite common because they are a so-called "hidden champion". They are producing all kinds of industrial adhesives which can be found in an abundance of applications such as credit cards, automotives, photovoltaics, displays, and many more. They are a German enterprise but also active in various international locations. Interestingly, they have an internal academy, e.g. for training new employees.
On Tuesday, 19. January 2021, DELO will introduce ~20 Young Researchers from Augsburg and Munich to the field of adhesives and give insights about careers of science graduates.
If you are interested to join: Please contact one of the IGS coordinators.
In the context of Covid-19, the presentation was planned online from scratch on. Thanks to DELO for preparing the meeting on StarLeaf!
In Februar 2020, ~20 Young Researcher from Augsburg and Munich visited the neutron reactor FRM-II in Garching.

The TRR 80 IGS has organized an open discussion forum with Prof. Dr. Stuart Parkin. He is one of the directors of the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics, Halle/Saale and has made great contributions to the application of the GMR-effect for magnetic storage devices. He has received many important awards for his work. The event was intended for Master and PhD students of the TRR 80.
The event took place on Tuesday, January 13th, 8:30 a.m. in the Faculty Club of the Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS), TUM, Garching.
On september 13. and 14. and october 20. 2017 there was a 3-day-course about communication and application training for the Young Researchers of the Transregio, held by Markus Neumann.
Planned program:
Two days on conversational and presentation skills with special emphasis on interviews, especially in application situations.
In addition, there will be another training day on october 20th, to answer specific questions, which may have emerged.
The training was designed for about 15 participants, who might also have attended the training at the last YR workshop at Lake Garda. The training tooke place in Augsburg (13./14.09.: Room S-288, starting at 9:30; 20.10.: Room 242, starting 9:30).
Markus Neumann is a qualified graduate in management studies with many years of professional experience in a business management position and as a coach of sales and project staff in nationally and internationally active companies.
Since 2007 he assists companies and people as a self-employed consultant, trainer, facilitator, coach and mediator, on the road to an effective communication. Some topics are improving contact with the customer, facilitate the information exchange, making the team more successful, be more convincing as a confident presenter, and resolving conflicts.
He has already led the TRR80 YR workshop at Lake Garda: "Effective discussion and negotiation management".
At the DPG spring meeting 2015 in Berlin, a PhD Symposium "Quantum Phase Transitions" of the Division of Magnetism and the Young DPG is co-organized by 3 members (Felix Rucker, Georg Benka, Steffen Säubert) of the TRR 80 IGS. The IGS also contributes financial support to this symposium.
The session starts at 9:30 on March 17th 2015.
List of invited speakers:
More details about the programm can be found on the DPG website.
