New FTU Board member (Nov. 2019)

After visiting XITASO in November 2019, a new FTU Board member from the Young Researcher has been elected. Congratulations to Maximilian Uhl!

The FTU Board comprises now:

  • Eva Benckiser (Senior Scientist)
  • Marcus Kollar (Senior Scientist)
  • Christian Pfleiderer (Senior Scientist)
  • Korbinian Geirhos (Young Researcher)
  • Ulrike Zweck (Young Researcher)
  • Maximilian Uhl (Young Researcher)

New coordinators since July 2019

After several years as coordinators Felix Rucker (TUM) and Franz Mayr (UA) handed over their coordinator positions in July 2019. They both strongly contributed to the success of the MGK, for example by organizing events like YR Forums or the Summer School, supporting the YRs regarding the YR workshop or updating the homepage. Thank you very much for your strong support!

The new coordinators are now:

  • Sebastian Bachus (UA)
  • Grace Causer (TUM)
  • Alfonso Chacon Roldan (TUM)

Since Sebastian Bachus was previously member of the FTU-Board a new YR Board member is needed and will be elected soon.

New YR-members in the IGS Board

On February 13th 2019, the YRs elected a new representative: Ulrike Zweck replaced Steffen Säubert. At the TRR 80 retreat meeting in Irsee on February 19th 2018, Sebastian Bachus was voted to replace Patrick Seiler. During the YR Workshop from October 8th to 11th 2018, Korbinian Geirhos was elected as replacement for Jonas Fischer. Currently, the 3 YR-members of the FTU-Board are:

  • Sebastian Bachus (UA)
  • Korbinian Geirhos (UA)
  • Ulrike Zweck (TUM)

Focused Lecture on New Magnetic Materials

Another "Focused Lecture" of the Integrated Graduate School of the TRR 80 took place on Friday, 29th March 2019 at the Universität Augsburg. Oleg Janson (IFW Dresden) and Alexander Tsirlin (Augsburg University) gave lectures on new magnetic materials (theory and experiments).

The lectures took place at Augsburg University in the seminar room S-403 and were transmitted to the TUM in Garching.

Abstract:

Magnetic phenomena are one of the key facets of correlated physics. In this Focus Lecture, we shall explain how magnetic behavior of real materials can be probed experimentally and understood on the microscopic level. The lecture will consist of three parts. In the first part, we shall present the most common techniques of magnetic characterization and showcase their typical pitfalls that occur in real experiments. In the second part, computational approaches to the ab initio modeling of magnetic interactions in real materials will be presented. The third part will provide the link between the previous two by showing how to go from the interaction parameters to the experimental magnetic response and vice versa, and which useful insights can be obtained in this way.

TimeTopicLecturer
10:00 - 10:45 Experimental characterization of new magnetic materials Alexander Tsirlin
10:45 - 11:00 Coffee break
11:00 - 12:30

Models for magnetic materials: a computational approach

Oleg Janson
12:30 - 13:30 Lunch break
13:30 - 14:15 Experiment and theory for magnetic materials: finding the link Alexander Tsirlin
14:15 Questions / discussion

YR Workshop 2018

The 2018th TRR 80 Young Researchers Workshop took place between the 8th and 11th of October 2018 in Riva del Garda at lake Garda (Italy). It was addressed to all "Young Researchers", who are members of a TRR 80 project (PhD, master, and bachelor students, as well as young postdocs). The aim of this workshop was to promote the scientific exchange among young scientists beyond specific TRR 80 collaborations.

The program included one and a half day seminar on "Projektmanagement". This workshop was held in German. For English-only speaking attendees, the trainer tried to help them to participate in the workshop as good as possible.

Furthermore there was have half a day of presentations from the participants, 7 minutes each. Every participant could freely choose an Ig nobel prize she/he wanted to present. On Wednesday afternoon an optional outdoor event took place. Finally, also a social evening was organized where the participation was voluntary. Costs for the outdoor event and the social evening were covered by the participants. More detailed information see below.

We were be staying at the Hotel Luise directly at Riva del Garda. Besides the tasty food, and the comfortable rooms, the hotel offers large rooms to host the different events. Registration, accommodation, and travel expenses were covered by the TRR 80.

You could register from now on until the 27th of July by e-mail to: daniel.jost@wmi.badw.de or josef.schmidbauer@frm2.tum.de

Applications were accepted on a first come, first serve basis. PhD students had priority over masters and postdocs.

The organizing committee:

  • Korbinian Geirhos (UA)
  • Daniel Jost (WMI)
  • Felix Rucker (TUM)
  • Josef Schmidbauer (TUM)

27 Oct 2017

Focused Lecture on Quantum Phase Transitions

Another "Focused Lecture" of the Integrated Graduate School of the TRR 80 took place on Friday, 27th October 2017 at the Technische Universität München. Stefan Kirchner (Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China) and Michael Knap (TUM)  gave lectures on Quantum Phase Transitions.

The lectures took place at TUM in the E21 seminar room and were transmitted to Augsburg University. The transmission was provided via Adobe Connect, so that everyone could watch the talks on his individual PC or mobile device. All you needed was a web browser with the Adobe Flash and Adobe Connect add-in installed (Firefox, Chrome, Safari, InternetExplorer) or the free Adobe Connect app on your mobile device.

New "Physics Calendar"

As proposed at the last TRR 80 Retreat Meeting in Freising, a new "Physics Calendar" was created, which contains dates of courses, summer schools, conferences, etc., which might be relevant for YRs within the TRR 80. You can find it as additional entry in the Curriculum section.

Please be aware that the presented list might not be complete. We need your help! If you have information about additional events in the area of TRR 80 relevant themes, please contact the IGS coordinators or the TRR 80 office. We will then update the calendar. Thank you!
